This is sudden, but here is a question.

• An electric guitar
• An acoustic guitar

To tell you the truth,

it depends on whether you want to use the electric guitar or the acoustic guitar, while using a looper, there will be a big differences if a problem easily occurs or not!

If you play the electric guitar, problems will not occur with any combination of electric guitars and a looper.No worries.

However…

For someone who plays the acoustic guitar, It is really tough.

If you are considering for buying an acoustic guitar for looper,

1. Make sure the guitar is an electric acoustic guitar
2. a type of a guitar which hardly causes howling
3. It has a volume knob

You need to select a guitar by mainly considering these three points.

1.Make sure the guitar is an electric acoustic guitar

If it is an archtop guitar, it is not possible to connect a looper and the guitar.
*It is possible to mount a pickup on an archtop guitar and make it into an electric acoustic guitar.
(Choosing a retrofit pickup is a little bit of a complicated subject, I am planning to write about it later in another article.)

2.Types are not likely to cause howling.

It is no problem to play through a small amplifier at home,but when you play a looper at a live bar and a large venue with loud sound, it causes howling with high probability.

What howling is…

If I explain howling in a very simple way, I think there would be an explosive beep sound when you put a microphone and a speaker close to each other, it is a guitar version of it.Further more, it is a noise caused by the sound that goes around between a speaker and a microphone, electric acoustic guitar has a microphone within the sound hole to catch the sound, there would sometimes be howling between that microphone and a monitor at a live bar etc.

Trouble would be sharply reduced by choosing a guitar which is not likely to cause howling.

3.The guitar has a volume knob.

Because of its structure, looper is a difficult piece of equipment for a PA to control the volume level of each instrument during a live performance, there are times when the performers themselves should make immediate decisions and fine-tune promptly.

*When mounting retrofit pickups, I recommend that you choose pickups that allow you to easily make fine adjustment the volume while playing.
(Choosing a retrofit pickup is a little bit of a complicated subject, I am planning to write about it later in another article.)

(1) is a must, but (2) and (3) are a must if you perform live.

The following guitars are the best choices for the above three points.

• Fender/ACOUSTASONIC
• Ovation Celebrity Elite CE48-RR

I recommend these.

However, both Fender/ACOUSTASONIC and Ovation are acoustic guitars with distinctive tones.
I could not say it all that they do not necessarily match the genre of music you want to express.

Some of you might be saying so.

The biggest measure is to separate the guitar for looper use and the guitar for non-looper use. However, if the tone of the guitar does not match the genre of the song you want to play with the looper…, the above measures are not sufficient.

In that case,you can cover the sound hole of your favorite acoustic guitar to prevent it from howling.
This is actually the method I use at the Looper World Competition.
